You can find the 24-digit serial number (e.g. 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000) on the registration card or on the inside cover of your CD holder. Use this number to install Photoshop.

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Adobe Photoshop, you will need to use the new 24-digit serial number which you can find on the inside cover of your CD holder that comes with the Photoshop 7.0 upgrade package. Note: the serial number you used to install previous versions of Photoshop will not work to install Photoshop 7.0.

If you are upgrading from a version of Photoshop prior to Photoshop 4.0, you will need to contact customer service at 800-492-3623.

If you are upgrading from Adobe Photoshop LE or Photoshop Elements, please use the serial number located on the registration card or on the inside cover of the CD holder included in your Photoshop 7.0 upgrade package. If your new 24-digit serial number does not work please contact Adobe Systems at 800-492-3623.

Optional Extensions and Plug-Ins

Several optional extensions are included in the Optional Extensions folder, which is located on the Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Application CD-ROM in the Goodies folder. These extensions let you customize and enhance the Adobe Photoshop program in a variety of ways. For more information, see the Read Me files included with the optional extensions.

There are also several optional plug-in modules included on the Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Application CD-ROM in the Optional Plug-Ins folder within the Goodies folder. Included in this folder are some additional file format and export plug-ins as well as filter plug-ins.

You will receive error messages if you set your additional plug-ins folder to use your Photoshop 6.0 plug-ins.

Initialization and Preferences Files

You can find the Photoshop 7.0 preference files in the following locations:

Windows 98:
Windows\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings

Windows NT:
WinNT\profiles\\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings

Windows 2000 and XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings

Note: The Application Data folder is a hidden folder and not visible by default. If you do not see the Application Data folder, go to Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View and check the option View Hidden Files and Folders.

Note: Many preferences are now in the Windows registry. To reset your Photoshop preferences you can hit Shift-Ctrl-Alt upon startup.

Installation Requirements

When installing Photoshop to a hard drive other than your system or boot drive (usually C:), you will still need to have at least 65-70MB free on your system drive to proceed with installation, regardless of how much space is on your installation drive.

Using Adobe Photoshop with Windows®

The following sections include useful information about using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software with different versions of Windows. (Please note that Photoshop 7.0 does not support Windows 3.1.x or Windows 95.)

Shared Files

Many files installed by Photoshop - such as TWAIN support files and MSVCRT*.* files (Microsoft runtime files) are shared with other programs. When you install or uninstall other programs that use these shared files, the file versions used by Photoshop may be overwritten or deleted. If you experience problems with features that depend on shared files, reinstall Photoshop.

Windows NT

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 can be run under Windows NT® for Intel compatible systems only. It will not run under other types of Windows NT such as Windows NT for DEC Alpha or Windows NT for PowerPC®.

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 requires Windows NT Service Pack 6a or higher.

Windows 2000

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 requires Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or higher.

File Associations

The Photoshop 7.0 installer allows you to associate file types with either Photoshop or ImageReady. When you associate a file type with an application, you specify which application will open when a file of that type is double-clicked on the desktop or in the Windows Explorer. Windows allows all its applications to associate themselves to various file types. If you choose the defaults in the Photoshop installer, you may find that Photoshop or ImageReady will open instead of another application when you double click on certain files. The Photoshop installer allows you to turn off this association with Photoshop or ImageReady if you prefer. To do so, click on each file type you do not want to associate and, for each type, choose "Do not change".

If you wish to change your file associations after installing Photoshop, please refer to the document, "How to Change File Associations in Windows" in the Adobe Systems Technical Solutions Database on the Adobe website, at this location: http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/ac22.htm.

Running Adobe Photoshop Over a Network

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 is not designed (nor was it tested) to be run when Windows is multi-launched over a network. If you want to run Adobe Photoshop on multiple Windows systems, make sure that each system has its own copy of Windows and Adobe Photoshop installed on the hard drive.

Language Settings (Windows XP and 2000 Only)

If you are using the English version of Windows XP or 2000 and add Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, Korean, or Japanese language components, you must set the language correctly in the Control Panel. For Windows XP, set the Language for non-Unicode programs in the Regional and Language Options control panel Advanced tab and on Windows 2000, set the System Locale using the Regional control panel, General tab, Set default button. Both systems will then require a reboot. If the language is not set correctly, you will experience display problems with text, file I/O, and Web features.

Improving Performance and Troubleshooting

The following sections describe how to improve your system's performance when working with Adobe Photoshop 7.0, and how to correct some common problems which may occur. For up to date information on optimizing Photoshop performance, refer to the document #318243, "Optimizing Performance in Photoshop for Windows", available online at http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/12dde.htm.

Fonts, Color Profiles and Application Startup Time

Upon startup, Photoshop must enumerate all of the fonts that will be available for the Type tools. If you have a large number of fonts installed on your system, this can cause Photoshop to take longer to startup. If you find the startup time for Photoshop 7.0 to be too long, you should remove any unused fonts from your system.

Likewise, all Color Profiles installed on the system must be read. Uninstall or remove any color profiles you will not be actively using to speed up the application startup time.

Compressed Drives and Virtual Memory

Adobe Systems recommends that you do not set either the Windows swap file or Adobe Photoshop's scratch disk to a compressed disk drive. On Windows NT, it is recommended you do not set your page file to the same disk as your primary scratch disk. For more information, see the user guide.

Scripting Photoshop

Download and install Adobe Photoshop Scripting Support so you can write and run scripts in Photoshop 7.0. Scripts can be written in Visual Basic or JavaScript on Windows.

Scripts let you automate operations in Photoshop. They can range from simple manipulation of a single selected object to complex control of multiple documents. You can even create workflows across multiple applications.

Please go to to download the scripting plug-in and for additional information.

Compatibility Issues

Graphics Card Issues

A variety of graphics card drivers may provide intermittent cursor display problems. These problems can include flickering cursors, on-screen artifacts, and cursors that don't immediately update when a new tool or cursor type is chosen. None of these display issues will affect the functionality of Photoshop. If you are experiencing any of these problems with your own graphics card, ensure that you have the latest driver for the card.

Miscellaneous Installer Issues

Windows 2000 and XP do not allow certain sections of the registry to be written to by users without administrative privileges. It is recommended that only those with administrator privileges and those that are logged on as administrator install Photoshop 7.0 on Windows 2000 or XP.

General installation notes
If you're using Windows 2000, Adobe recommends that you log in as a user with administrative privileges before you install PageMaker 7.0. If you do not have administrative privileges, contact your system administrator for assistance.

PageMaker 7.0 uses the Microsoft Windows Installer services. On older systems such as Windows 98, this means that you may be required to reboot before installation proceeds so that the Windows Installer service can be initialized.

Installing Adobe PageMaker
Use the following procedure to install PageMaker from the Adobe PageMaker 7.0 Application CD. You cannot run PageMaker from the CD; you must instsed in the professionally designed templates included in PageMaker.

These font folders and fonts are copied automatically to the following location:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\Extras\Fonts

Use ATM, ATM Lite, or a different font manager to install the fonts on your system. For more information, see the ATM or system documentation.

Upgrading PANTONE® color libraries
By default, PageMaker 7.0 installs the original PANTONE color libraries. In addition, PageMaker installs a version of the revised PANTONE color libraries in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\
[language folder]\Color\Additional Color Libraries\New

Although these new libraries include many enhancements, they may create printing workflow problems such as unwanted spot colors in the Colors palette, distinct shifts in color separations, and undesired color changes when printing. However, you can replace the existing PANTONE color libraries with the revised version. For more information, see the PANTONE_Readme.pdf file in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\
[language folder]\Color\Additional Color Libraries

Upgrading from previous versions of PageMaker
In most cases, you can simply double-click PageMaker files from previous versions of PageMaker to automatically convert the files to PageMaker 7.0. You should also review the following sections to ensure a smooth conversion from previous versions of PageMaker to the newest version.

Using files customized with PageMaker 6.52 or earlier in PageMaker 7.0
We recommend that you retain your previous version of PageMaker until all of your publications are converted to version 7.0. PageMaker 6.6 stored several custom settings, such as tracking values and color libraries, in separate files, which you should also retain if you want to reuse those settings. You will need to move these files to the corresponding location in the PageMaker 7.0 folder structure.

To move custom settings:
Tracking values file, Trakvals.bin (move to PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\[language folder]).
Custom color libraries (.ACF files; move to PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\[language folder]\Color).
New or customized scripts (move to PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\[language folder]\Plugins\Scripts).
Customized PPDs (move to PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\[language folder]\PPD4).
Custom user dictionaries (.UDC files, including the default Aldusn.udc file; move to PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\Linguist\Prx\[language folder]).

Converting earlier PageMaker publications to PageMaker 7.0
You can convert a publication created PageMaker versions 4.0-6.5x simply by opening it in PageMaker 7.0 using the File > Open command.

To open PageMaker 4.0-6.5x publications, use either the File > Open command (to open one file at a time) or the Utilities > Plug-ins > Publication Converter command (to locate and open all or some of the PageMaker 4.0-6.5 publications on your system). With File > Open, PageMaker 4.0- 6.5 files are converted into untitled PageMaker 7.0 publications, and the original publications are preserved. With Utilities > Plug-ins > Publication Converter, you have the option of replacing the earlier files with the converted versions in order to save disk space.

In PageMaker 7.0, you can use File> Open to open a publication from a different platform if the file is saved in PageMaker 6.5 or 7.0 format. To open a PageMaker 5.0 or 6.0 for MacOS in PageMaker 7.0 for Windows, use the Cross- Platform PageMaker Converter.

For more information, see the Adobe PageMaker 7.0 User Guide, or see the WXPlConv.PDF in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\Extras\XPlatConv

Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\Extras\XPlatConv\XPMConv.exe

Improving performance
Speed and performance are greatly influenced by the amount of available memory, the system configuration, how the PageMaker program was first installed, and the way in which your system uses available RAM. The following sections provide tips for improving performance and working more efficiently in PageMaker.

Memory size
PageMaker stores temporary files on your hard disk during a work session, so it is important to have plenty of space available on your hard disk while working with PageMaker. In addition, for virtual memory purposes for Windows, we recommend you have at least 50 MB of free disk space on your hard disk.

Printing efficiently
Use the correct PPD for your PostScript output device. Items in the PPD that can affect print performance include the amount of virtual memory (VM) available, permanently installed fonts, and color capability. If PageMaker has correct information about these attributes, it can send PostScript to the printer more efficiently. For more information, see "Transferring PPD files".

If color fidelity is not critical when printing proofs, disable color management to improve printing performance.

If printing to a non PostScript printer, check with your printer manufacturer to ensure that you are using the latest version of the printer driver for your device.

Using Adobe Type Manager
When you are using Adobe Type Manager® (ATM), and you plan to use large display sizes, beþsure to increase the size of the ATM font cache to at least 256K (the default) if your system has up to 10 MB of RAM, and to at least 512K ifþyour system has more than 10 MB of RAM. PageMaker 7.0 requires ATM (or ATM Lite) version 4.1 or later.

Use the Application CD to install ATM Lite 4.1 for Windows. ATM is not available for Windows 2000.

Color management performance
The Color Management System Preferences dialogþbox contains an option to embed source profilesþwith your file, which is important when transferring your publication to a computer other than the one on which it was created. If the other computer has the same device profiles installed, you do not need to select this option.

If left selected, this option causes a significant drop in performance. For optimal performance, select this option only when you save a PageMaker file for another computer, and deselect it immediately after.

Setting save options to smaller
In the PageMaker Preferences dialog box (File > Preferences > General), click Smaller to have PageMaker save your publication using the least amount of file space. With this option selected, PageMaker creates a new, compact version of your publication each time you save. Saving a publication takes longer and uses more RAM, but large publications are reduced considerably in size, which improves performance.
